This beautiful intoxicating flower is one of my favorites. The night blooming Cereus (pronounced like "serious"). A type of tuberous cacti. When healthy, this plant has several flowers that will start to develop  near late spring through early summer. Each flower will bloom for only one night! These past two nights are the beginning of many special nights to come. If we go out to dinner, we arrive home greeted by the strong sweet smell of these giant flowers. They are about 9" in diameter. Each stalk is covered with flowers that will all bloom on different nights. Sometimes I like to sit on my porch with a hot beverage and seriously enjoy the Cereus!
I put a side by side photo below of Monday night flowers and Tuesday night flowers. You'll notice the photo on the left has two flowers that are not open on the right. The photo on the right is of those closed two flowers "open". You can kind of see the flowers wilting in the background from the night before. I find them spectacular and breathtaking! They give me a big smile every time.
I've attached a quick time lapse video I found. Enjoy. :D

Cirque School Hollywood

A Cirque show in Hollywood? Yes. Last night I attended an up close and personal cirque show performance held at Cirque School in Hollywood, CA. These students have a passion for circus arts or just enjoy a different form of fitness. (Photos are not the best quality because you cannot use flash photography)

This show was quite inspiring. Not only to get fit but to be able to do something different and fun. Classes on stretching and flexibility to aerial arts are offered. You can can attend classes once a week or a few times a week depending on your obsession.

Every three to four months there is a show put on by the students. They are comprised of first time performers to veteran acts of all ages. The schools motto for sign up is it's "for anybody with any body"!

I highly recommend Cirque School to anybody ;) for strength and fitness or viewing pleasure.

Mother's Day at the races

For many years we have taken our mom to the horse races at Hollywood Park for Mother's Day  brunch.  We love to dress up in our Sunday best...at the races.

First post is at 1:00 pm. Our day starts around 11:00 am, after mom goes to church. This gives us enough time to go for a  round or two at the buffet and catch up on the jockeys and horses that will be racing. Typical conversation around this time is , "Who are we going to bet on?", right after, "I'm going to get one more cheesecake." There is usually a large group of us and we get to name one of the races. For that race, we are escorted down to the finish line where we can view the race up close. Afterwards we take a group photo. Sometimes with the winning horse, if there is time.

This year was extra special. After our race, our friends dad  invited us to visit the Hollywood Park ranch. Friendly ranch cats greeted us, got to see and pet some of the horses, and of course play with Portia the goat (my favorite).

This is a full day of complete fun. Eating, betting, yelling/cheering, and more eating is very exhausting and well worth it. After several years of hearing the threat of Hollywood Park to close, this year was the final Mothers Day at the races. Needless to say our race name was, "WHERE ARE WE  TAKING MOM NEXT YEAR?".

Trampoline Excercise

My new obsession...working out on a trampoline. I can't believe everyone is not doing this. With all the research I have done, it seems to be the most simple and fun workouts when I don't feel like going to the gym, a class, or outside.

This thing I grew up with as a kid. Taking up very little space. Played on it for a little while and then it just hung out against the wall, under a bed, in a closet, and finally, after several years,  it was given away. I actually broke my left arm jumping off of it with my dress shoes on. Little did I know how much I missed it.

It's excellent for your lymphatic system as well as a number of other benefits for the whole body. Personally I need no to low impact exercises and a mini trampoline is just the thing for me. I can rebound while watching a show (perfect distraction of time). Work out to one of many videos like the one above. Or take my mini rebounder out in the yard while getting fresh air.  It helps my circulation from being on my feet all day. I read somewhere that eight minutes of rebounding is equivalent to running a mile!! I know!! Crazy right? Just two minutes every hour boosts your white blood cells.

I'm happy I finally know how wonderful rebounding is for my body. Not a day goes by that I don't use it...even for a minute. ;)

I'm in the zone. It's been a long time since feeling this inspired. I attended the Avalon Ball this past weekend and had a grand time. When I got back to work, the salon had received  a ton of upcoming hair events. I'm particular about which of these shows to go to, however, the 2012 Davines show seems fun. I checked out some of the photos from this past years' event, and wow! I'm truly inspired.
I've had every style you can possibly imagine. Super long (to the knees) to shaved. Bobbed, pixie cut, spiked, mohawked, shaved one side, shaved two sides, shaved all around, dread extensions, braid extensions, braid and dread extensions together, bangs, no bangs, betty bangs, the no bang bang, angled bangs, every shaped bangs, and don't get me started on colors. It has been done already. Even colors without a proper name.
I've been growing my hair with a similar color pattern for the past 10 years. And lately, I've been sporting this cool, long version, a symmetrical cut.

My new challenge is to combine long and short hairstyles.
The photo above is of me today. Nothing special. It was a bit windy. I will be documenting these fun changes. Starting tomorrow...Stay tuned!
